What Are Binaural Beats?

The binaural beats are an fantasy created by the brain when you heed to two tones with slightly different prevalence at the same time.

Or put another way.

Binaural beats are a perception of sound created by yourbrain.However, each at a different prevalence and each in a different note, your brain creates an more tone you can hear, If you attend to two tones. This third tone is called a binaural beat. You hear it at the prevalence difference between the two tones.

What Can Binaural Beats Do?

There are binaural beats at different frequencies and each frequency is associated with results that correspond to different levels of brain wave activity.

Delta waves binaural beats:

Delta waves or delta brain waves are the slowest brain waves. These waves have a frequency between 0.5 Hz and 4 Hz. As you move into deeper stages of sleep, your brain changes from theta waves to delta waves. Dreams can happen. Listening to binaural beats at delta frequencies can help you sleep. Although it also has other benefits.

How Do Binaural Beats Work?

  • A 2020 pilot study explored the use of three binaural entrainment frequencies: 40 Hz, 25 Hz, and 100 Hz. The participants were assessed based on their cognitive abilities, mood, and memory. All three aspects were found to have improved with the use of a Gamma 40 Hz frequency.

While using binaural beats has its upsides, more research is needed to comprehend the full scope of benefits that they have.

Is binaural beats safe to use?

Binaural beats are generally safe to use. That said, there are certain groups of people that should avoid using them:

  • People who suffer from seizure disorders. The increasing or decreasing brainwave stimulation may trigger abnormal neurological impulses.
  • Those with pacemakers or with other heart problems. Binaural beats may be known to affect brainwaves, but they may also affect heart rhythm.
  • Those operating heavy machinery. Induced relaxation isn’t compatible with driving or using machines that require your full attention.
  • Children. Their brains are still developing and therefore, aren’t encouraged to use binaural beats.
  • Pregnant women. For the reason above, those who are pregnant might want to steer clear because their fetus is still in the development stage.

One question regarding safety that often arises is: can binaural beats damage your brain? The answer is no. While they can affect your brainwaves and have the ability to alter the physiological state of your brain, they can’t damage your brain.

Ways to Use Binaural Beats

Other than putting on your headphones and pressing play, there are several other ways binaural beats can be implemented:

#1: In your meditation practice

There are studies that show binaural beats induce delta activity in the brain and therefore, lengthen deep sleep. This leads to:

  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Less sleepiness
  • Reduced stress and anxiety
  • Increased ease of waking up
  • Feeling refreshed in the morning

#3: As you study

You’ve heard of the Mozart effect, right? People who listen to Mozart’s work tend to score higher on various cognitive tests and demonstrate higher mental performance.

Binaural beats do the same thing — they help create a synchronicity between the brain’s hemispheres and increase cognitive function. This helps you think more holistically. Instead of being predominantly a left-brain analyst or a right-brain creative, you become a whole-brain thinker.

Always Listen to Low Volumes

Binaural Beats work only at lower volumes due to two reasons. First of all, they should not dominate. The purpose of using binaural beats is to enhance the focus on the main task, be it work, sleep, or meditation. Secondly, our brain computes the beat’s frequency differences better at lower volumes.

Short-Time Frames Are Better

Binaural Beats work better when they are used to get into the mood and then switched off. Half an hour or so would be good enough. When you are about to start your work, a few minutes of the beats can put you in the alert state for work. A light sleep prep with the beats, right before bedtime can work wonders for your wellbeing. Overdose, on the other hand, is harmful. Many hours of listening to them can cause the opposite effect. There have been reports about severe headaches, nausea, unwanted drowsiness etc due to prolonged use.

Choose the Right Beats

Depending on the frequency range of binaural beats, they can have a different effect on our brain. While some frequencies help in learning and memory, few others help in relaxation.

Seek the Music That Reflects You

Our connection with any music has a lot to do with our own uniqueness. Even with binaural beats, it holds true. Over the course of time, you will have your own favorites in the binaural beats. Treasure them in your playlists. Throw away the ones that gave you a negative vibration.

Don’t Jump into the Middle of the Track

Many of us have the tendency to skip certain parts of the songs when we listen to them. And that’s alright when you listen to normal music. Binaural beats are different. They have been developed to follow a pattern that is well-aligned with our brain reactions and functions. Start the track from the beginning when you listen to binaural beats. The slow progressions and transformations are all part of the plan. They need to be listened to as such for the proper benefit from the process.

Make Them Part of Your Daily Routine

Listen to them daily. Soon, when we go back to the ‘normal’ or ‘new-normal’ days, we might get super busy again. Or some of you might be super busy now. I’d recommend 5 minutes of light meditation every morning to alert you for the day. And maybe 5 minutes at night for inducing better sleep. Of course, the morning meditation and evening meditation would need two different frequencies. While one is for waking up into an alert, focused state, the other needs to do the opposite. Daily listening can help to make sure that stress and anxiety won’t shoot up. While it’s good to listen at the start of tasks, it is not absolutely necessary. The must-have ones are the morning and evening meditations. Others are good to have.
